Urban Operations Studio/projects/architecture is culture

Architecture has marginalized itself by shifting its focus away from cultural commentary towards a position of cultural commodity. In order to re-establish a critical voice in contemporary society, architecture must relinquish its tendency to rely on ecstatic formal gestures and embrace a strategy of exterior homogeneity. By accepting that difference has become commonplace and has ceased to act as a method of resistance, architecture is free to pursue a more flexible system of spatial development that allows it to remain fluid in its use of program, material, and form. What results is a language that provides an effective environment for both domestic and commercial entities without relegating architecture to iconography or cultural coding. This project is an attempt to crystallize that environment, as well as investigate the emerging condition of uncertainty that is the hallmark of the global city. –Thesis statement, 01/12/02.
